This home has 16 bathrooms. Is that too much?

A luxury mansion in New York’s Long Island has a unique feature — with 16 bathrooms, the house has nearly as many toilets as bedrooms.

The 15 Lohan Court house, which boasts 11,000 square feet, 10 bedrooms and 17 acres along Long Island’s Peconic Bay, was recently listed by Sotheby’s International Realty in Southampton for $7.25 million, the Wall Street Journal first reported. The house also has an usually large number of bathrooms for its size – 11 full and five half bathrooms without a shower – that both the owners and the agent hope will prove to be a selling bonus.

Over the last two decades, people have started to specifically look for homes with lots of bathrooms, New York developer John Kean told the Journal.

“You can stop the fighting by giving them all their own bathroom,” Kean said. According to data from Realtor.com, 7 out of every 10,000 homes in the U.S. since 2010 has more than 10 bathrooms — the numbers are up from 4.2 out of 10,000 in the 2000s and 1 out of 10,000 in the 1970s. Kean predicts that 90 percent of present-day luxury estates already have more than 10 bathrooms.

Ritchey Howe of Sotheby’s is the real estate agent in charge of the sale. Naturally, the house has numerous amenities going for it – views of Long Island’s Peconic Bay, a modern-style estate, a library, outdoor and indoor pools, a double-height fireplace, a secluded park drive-in and even its own elevator for the main home’s three floors. Its owners, 24-year-old twin siblings Alessandro and Sabrina Giacometti, listed the house in 2018 after their father passed away.

Alessandro Giacometti said the bathrooms are a plus for those who like to entertain— they came in handy when more than 100 guests showed up for their father’s 65th birthday.

“The whole house was filled,” he told the WSJ. “There are so many common areas in the house—the pool, reading room—there’s always a bathroom nearby.”
