Day Light Saving Time and Real Estate

Dan Sexton Real Estate·Tuesday, March 7, 2017

This weekend is one of the most important weekends in Real Estate. It’s the weekend that day-light-savings-time kicks in, Hoooray! Most home buyers don’t like to look at houses when its dark out and who can blame them. You can’t see what needs to be seen. Sure, if you can turn the lights on and see the inside but some of the most important items to see are on the outside. We need to check out the condition of the roof, foundation, fence, AC, and windows just to name a few. By having that extra bit of daylight in the evening, buyers can now have look after work. That expands the amount of “Hunting” hours. This will help to see them when as they first hit the market. And we know in this crazy DFW real estate market that is critical.

Did you know that Day Light Saving Time (DST) first started in Canada in 1908. Germany was the first country to adopt it in 1916. Woodrow Wilson signed “Fast Time” into law in 1918 in support of the war effort but that was repealed later that year. Not until 1942 did it go year-round thanks to FDR. Over the next half decade year-round DST had many changes and variations. In 1966 Congress enacted the US Uniform Time Act which at the time started on the Last Sunday of April and ended on the last Sunday in October. Not everyone liked the DST as they were concerned with children going to school in the dark.

The GWB administration extended the time period in 2005 by about one month. It now starts the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November.

Let’s all get on the band wagon to have DST made permanent this will really help all us Real Estate Agents.
