| Realtor.com
Preparing your taxes can be a drag, but the promise of a refund means you can hopefully look forward to having some extra cash on hand. So rather than squirreling that money away for a rainy day, why not invest it in your backyard—and in turn, your whole summer?
No idea where to start your spending spree? We touched base with some of the industry’s top interior designers to find out exactly where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck, no matter how much of that check you want to spend.
Here are some of their favorite trendy outdoor items that will help spruce up your yard for the warm months to come.
1. Garden torches, $49
It’s never too late to be outside if you have the proper lighting, and torches are always a fun way to liven things up.
“For a modern take on the Tiki torch, try these Orchos Garden Torchesfrom All Modern,” says Sarah Cousins of Sarah Cousins Interior Design.
2. Porcelain hurricane lamps, $29–$59
For a more romantic touch of light, bring these hurricane lamps to your yard. Mackenzie Collier of Mackenzie Collier Interiors suggests these lamps from West Elm.
“The perforated white surface will cast a beautiful glowing shadow,” she says.
3. Planters, $149–$199
“Another less expensive way to freshen an outdoor space in time for spring and summer is to add some planters around the yard,” says Jessica Nakata of the Black Door, who suggests these concrete fluted planters from Pottery Barn.
“They aren’t a big financial commitment, and the flowers or plants can be replanted from year to year,” she says.
4. Funky side tables, $199
Ditch that wicker side table you’ve been hanging onto for the better half of a decade and replace it with one in uber-trendy terrazzo stone. Cousins recommends this side table from CB2 to bring modern vibes to your outdoor space.
Another reason to ditch the wicker? “When buying furniture or anything that’s going to stay outside long-term, check the weight and consider pieces that won’t blow away easily,” Cousins says.
5. Fashionable umbrella, $348
Throw that basic patio umbrella in storage and try one that channels the poolside luxury of Palm Springs circa 1970.
“This sun-drenched gold umbrella has a vintage vibe that we can’t get enough of,” Collier says.
6. Fire pit
Outdoor living trends point to making backyards function like indoor spaces—and more than any other item, a fire pit will help transform your backyard into the ultimate area to gather guests.
Nakata recommends this gas-powered, concrete fire pit.
“They create a destination in an outdoor space,” she says. “They are cozy on summer nights, and fabulous for entertaining.”
7. Outdoor bench, $699
This outdoor sofa made of eucalyptus wood with a whitewash finish may seem tough to keep clean, but it’s surprisingly durable.
“This sofa ticks all the right boxes and will look great with any design aesthetic or color palette,” says Collier.
8. Patio chairs, $749
Nakata says if you’ve got the space, you should set up more than one area outside—and chairs like these can make it happen.
“Having comfortable, weather-resistant chairs in a space other than the dining area creates another destination in an outdoor space,” she says. “Perhaps it’s just two chairs with a table in between in the corner of a small yard, or four chairs around a fire pit if space allows for it.”
9. Natural coffee table, $998
Every patio set needs a table—where else will you set your margarita? Collier chose this weather-resistant one from Anthropologie that has so much personality, it’s hard to pass up.
“This table takes us straight back to the ’70s,” she says. “The leaf detail is beautiful.”
10. Gardening table, $1,098
Calling all green thumbs! If you have the room and consider gardening a serious hobby, you should consider this gardening table. It can serve double duty.
“It’ll provide a space for you to get your potting and other gardening work done, and it can double as a buffet table when you entertain,” says Cousins.
